1. DID YOU KNOW HOW THE DEMAND FOR EXPERTS IN THE FIELD OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING HAS BEEN FLUCTUATING OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS?

During the past ten years, www.moj-posao.net job portal had been intensively monitoring advertisements for recruiting experts in the field of computer engineering and IT on a quarterly basis. The trend in the number of advertisements published demonstrated that, despite the financial crisis, this area had been propulsive and that the number of announced vacancies in 2014 returned to its pre-crisis levels of 2008.

2. DID YOU KNOW WHICH EMPLOYMENT INDICATORS ARE RECORDED IN THE SECTOR OF “INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS” AND WHAT ARE THE ANTICIPATIONS OF EMPLOYERS?

Results of the latest survey of employers conducted by the Croatian Employment Service in 2014 pointed out that the sector of “Information and Communications” experienced the biggest increase in employment during the past year by as much as 6%, while some sectors experienced the same amount of decrease!

In 2014, total employment growth in all sectors in Croatia was at the level of 1.1% which means that this sector experienced a growth in employment 5.5 times bigger than in the rest of the economy!

The survey demonstrates that employers expect a further growth in employment of 1.2% in the whole economy, while employers in the field of “Information and Communications” are planninganother increase in employment of 7.8%.

During the past ten years, experts with knowledge in the field of system engineering have been the second most sought after group among all IT professionals employed in the Republic of Croatia according to the survey of employers’ needs conducted by CEA, CISEx and CCE (the distribution of needs is demonstrated by the chart located below the next question). Their careers are closely associated with current technologies which are developing constantly and dynamically and the imperative in their employment is represented by industrial certifications which, in addition to professional recognition, provide better financial conditions and simplify access to European and international employers. The study program in system engineering is prepared with regard to these specific qualities in order to provide an advantage in the career development of computer engineers in relation to graduates of other similar (professional) study programs.

4. DID YOU KNOW HOW THE LABOUR MARKET HAS BEEN FLUCTUATING IN THE FIELD OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERING?

During the past ten years, experts with knowledge in the field of software engineering have beenthe most sought after group among all IT professionals employed in the Republic of Croatia and account for 50% of the total employment in the IT sector according to the results of the same survey. Their careers are closely associated with current technologies which are developing dynamically and the imperative in their employment is represented by industrial certifications which, in addition to professional recognition, provide better financial conditions and simplify access to European and international employers. The study program in software engineering is prepared with regard to these specific qualities and dominant technologies of today (.NET, JAVA, Android and others) in order to provide an advantage in the career development of computer engineers in relation to graduates of other similar (professional) study programs.

5. DO YOU KNOW WHICH LEVEL OF PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION IS REQUIRED BY EMPLOYERS WHEN SELECTING EMPLOYEES IN THE FIELD OF ICT AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING?

The survey of employers’ needs annually conducted by CEA, CISEx and CCE demonstrates another important piece of information related to qualifications of employees which are sought-after by employers. Even though five-year study programs are predominantly sought-after in this sector, the proportion of employees with a tree-year study program is high at 41%. This differs somewhat from the overall results of the survey of employers conducted by the Croatian Employment Service in 2014 which demonstrates that Croatian employers are 3.3 times more frequently requiring graduate than “only” undergraduate degrees.

6. . DO YOU KNOW WHICH TECHNOLOGIES WILL CHANGE THE WAY WE LIVE BY 2025 ACCORDING TO THE RESEARCH CONDUCTED BY MCKINSEY GLOBAL INSTITUTE? ARE ANY OF THEM RELATED TO THE FIELD OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING?

In May 2013, McKinsey Global Institute published a study entitled ” Disruptive technologies: Advances that will transform life, business, and the global economy ” which significantly managed to shake the world. In this study experts identified 12 technologies that will notably change our lives, businesses and the overall global economy during the upcoming 10 years. They have also quantified the financial potential for each of them. Simply stated, three of the first four completely belong to the field of computer engineering, and additional 4 among the first 9 are largely related to computer engineering.

We thought about this while developing our study programs and made areas such as mobile internet, Internet of Things, Cloud computing, robotics and 3D designs the basic elements of our study programs in the field of computer engineering.

7. DO YOU KNOW WHAT MULTIMEDIA COMPUTING IS AND WHICH NEEDS OF SOCIETY AND ECONOMY IT RESPONDS TO?

During the past years, the field of multimedia computing has been the most dynamic field in the development of computer engineering which has been breaking the records in the number of users and the growth rates of employment on a daily basis. On the wave of the development of social networks and mobile smart devices, the demand for different types of multimedia content (video, animation, audio) and systems (web portals, CMS systems, e-commerce) is greatly expanding.

Following the trends in hardware sales, where the dominant role has been taken over by mobile computer systems (tablets and smart phones) and the exponential increase in the number of social networks users, the first study program in multimedia computing was created in the Republic of Croatia. At the undergraduate level, the study program is directed towards Front end development and covers technologies such as HTML5, CSS, PHP, Android, Databases, CMS systems, etc. as well as elements of responsive design and organization of web sites and applications.

The study program continues at the graduate level through multimedia sub-specialization of the study program in applied computer engineering with a significant focus on all aspects of digital content, especially 3D modeling and visualization, engineering aspects of sound processing and implementation of the resulting content in IT solutions on various platforms.

Combination of knowledge in most sought-after technologies and prestigious industrial certifications will provide multimedia computing engineers with a significant advantage in career development and employment and the fact that this field will experience intensive growth speaks in favor of career choices in multimedia computing.

This fact alone clearly shows the relevance of the official announcements made by this social network.
